Deck railings and stairs in Sioux Falls

Guards and steps that are solid, the right height and easy to live with, whether new or replacing worn ones.

Deck railings (code calls them guards) keep people from falling off a raised deck, and stairs get you to the yard. If a railing in Sioux Falls or a nearby town wobbles, a stair rocks, or you just want a cleaner look, we connect you with an independent builder who replaces or upgrades them.

What does the residential code expect?

  • When guards are needed. Under the International Residential Code, which a South Dakota code summary says Sioux Falls follows in its 2021 edition, guards are required where a walking surface is more than 30 inches above the ground below.
  • Height and openings. Guards generally need to be at least 36 inches tall on a deck, with openings small enough that a 4-inch sphere can't pass through.
  • Stairs. Steps need consistent rise and run, and stairs with four or more risers need a graspable handrail.

The builder and the city inspector have the final word for your deck; these are the common rules homeowners ask about.

Which railing style fits?

StyleWhy people pick itKeep in mind
WoodLowest cost, matches a wood deckNeeds finish; posts need solid blocking and bolts
AluminumSlim, no painting, many colorsCosts more than wood
Composite or vinylMatches composite boards, little upkeepBulkier posts and rails
CableOpen view across the yardNeeds very stiff posts and periodic tensioning

Why do railings and stairs loosen?

Guard posts work like levers. Every time someone leans on a rail, the bottom of the post pulls against the deck frame. Posts held by a couple of nails or lag screws loosen over a few seasons, especially as wood shrinks and swells through Sioux Falls summers and freezes. Stairs suffer where the stringers sit: on bare soil or a single block that frost can move, the bottom step rocks or the stringer rots.

Snow and stairs

With about 45 inches of snow in a typical winter, stairs get shoveled, salted and walked on wet. A landing pad of concrete or pavers at the bottom keeps stringers off the soil. If the stairs face north and stay shaded, ask about a handrail on both sides and a board or tread with good grip.

What changes the price?

  • Linear feet of railing and the style you choose
  • Whether posts need new blocking or the deck edge needs reinforcing
  • The number of steps, landings and turns
  • Gates for kids or dogs, and lighting on posts or steps
